Hypocrisy: Carbon Footprint the Size of…Some Really Big Thing

At his suburban Nashville home, Ex-Vice President Al Gore enjoyed the Oscar awarded to “An Inconvenient Truth,” the documentary on global warming in which he starred. But the Tennessee Center for Policy Research gained access to Gore’s utility bills for two years and published the gas and electric bills for his 20-room home and pool house. It turned out the home devoured nearly 221,000 kilowatt-hours in 2006, more than 20 times the national average of 10,656 kilowatt-hours. The Center’s president, Drew Johnson said, “If this were any other person with $30,000-a-year in utility bills, I wouldn’t care. But he tells other people how to live and he’s not following his own rules.”

From Say anythig

Here’s the video of the full exchange between Gore and Rep. Marsha Blackburn (R – KY) featured by Ingraham:

Now, as a shameless capitalist, I don’t have a problem with profit.  I think every citizens should be free to turn a buck if they can.  That’s the way the world works.

But there’s a difference between capitalistic profit and profit through exploitation.  And Gore is exploiting people.

In a capitalistic transaction in a free market everyone gets what they want.  If I’m selling widgets to people, it is only because they have a need (demand) for the widgets I am supplying.  They don’t have to buy my widgets.  They could buy someone else’s widgets.  The point is that the transaction is entirely voluntary.  I voluntarily sell them widgets because I want their money.  They voluntarily buy widgets from me because they need the widgets.

It’s a win-win.

What Gore and his fellow green industry rent-seekers are doing is seeking to profit through the government mandate of demand for their product.  There is no voluntary market for things like carbon credits.  That’s why Gore and his fellow looters are lobbying the government to create one.

Gore is certainly right when he says that he and his fellow rent-seekers are “investing,” but what they’re investing in is the lobbying of the government to manufacture demand for what they’re selling.

That’s not capitalism.
